DESCRIPTION:Take a free backstage tour of the Alex Theatre for an exclusive\, behind-the-scenes look at the historic venue as you have never seen it before! \nThe tour is led by a guide who will conduct an overview of the landmark’s 90-year history\, from its inception as a vaudeville house and movie palace in 1925 to its transformation to a world-class performing arts and entertainment center in the 1990s and more recently\, the backstage expansion of 2014 and current programs and activities. \nParticipants will also have the chance to see sound and lighting demos and explore and learn about the facility’s interior and exterior architecture\, in addition to the sculptures and art and antique objects that adorn the venue. \nThis two-hour walking tour includes climbing stairs and is not recommended for young children. There is no elevator access to the Terrace and Balcony levels. \nEach tour is limited to 20 people. \nAttendees will also have the opportunity to purchase merchandise in the lobby. SUMMARY:Glendale Youth Orchestra Presents 27th Season Opener
DESCRIPTION:The Glendale Youth Orchestra (GYO) is one of Los Angeles County’s lead youth orchestras. The GYO has played twice in recent years at the Walt Disney Concert Hall to great acclaim. In 2011\, the GYO auditioned and was selected as a PREMIER LA Phil Youth Orchestra. GYO’s mission is based on the belief that our young people have a better chance of succeeding in their world if they appreciate and participate in its rich artistic and cultural traditions. GYO provides young musicians in grades 6-12 from all over L.A. County a unique opportunity to play classical music under the direction of Juilliard-trained conductor Brad Keimach. The GYO has been a Resident Company of the Alex Theatre for 19 years. \nBrad Keimach\, Conductor \nMASCAGNI – Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana \nBEETHOVEN – Egmont Overture \nSAINT-SAËNS – Violin Concerto #3 – 1st movement\nAnna Gong\, violin \nSCHUBERT – Symphony No. 8 (‘Unfinished’) \nDEBUSSY – Petite Suite \nAnna Gong is currently 15 years old and a 10th grader attending Harvard-Westlake School. She started studying the violin at age 5 under her grandmother Lubin Yu\, and began studying with her mother\, Bing Wang (Associate Concertmaster of the LA Philharmonic) at age 9. She is currently the concertmaster of both Harvard-Westlake’s Middle School Symphony and the Glendale Youth Orchestra. She joined the GYO at the age of 12\, and has soloed with the orchestra playing part of the Handel Messiah in March 2013 and was one of the Concerto Winners playing the Mozart Concerto no. 4 in May 2014\, in addition to having won first place in many competitions.
