THE BIG SLEEP, a 1946 film noir directed by Howard Hawks, is the first film version of Raymond Chandler’s 1939 novel of the same name. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart as private detective Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall as Vivian Rutledge. A top-notch supporting cast that includes Martha Vickers, Dorothy Malone, ‘Cowboy’ Bob Steele, Regis Toomey, and the ever-present Elisha Cook Jr. ably assists the two stars. Special On-Stage Guest: Susan King, former entertainment writer at the Los Angeles Times who specialized in Classic Hollywood stories.
