SUMMARY:Stargaze Productions Presents AEGIS Live in Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:One of the most popular OPM bands is the New and Enhanced AEGIS Band\, now graced by 7 members – six girls and a man\, whom the girls tease as already being like one of them (of course\, they’re just kidding). \nThe band has truly become a family after years of shared experiences: making music\, traveling to foreign shores\, sharing rooms\, food\, stories and lives. But more than simply being family\, due to the potpourri of native roots within the band the AEGIS members also seem to represent the the three major islands of the Philippines. Original members Juliet and Mercy Sunot (lead vocalists) and their youngest sister and newest member of AEGIS\, Kris Sunot\, come from Cagayan de Oro. Stella Maries Galindo-Pabico is from Misamis Occidental\, Vilma Goloviogo from Manila\, bass guitarist Rowena ‘Weng’ Pinpin-Adriano is a Pampagueña\, and Rey Abenoja\, the lone male member\, hails from Southern Leyte. \nFormerly known as AG’s Sound Trippers (AG’s being the name of their manager’s company)\, the group opted to shorten the name to AG’s or AEGIS. Since the literary meaning of AEGIS is ‘Shield’or ‘Protection\,’ the group feels the name expresses what they want to share with their listeners and what they hope listeners feel when hearing their songs: the sense of being ‘protected’ and ‘shielded’ from being lonely. Most of the songs the members of AEGIS chose for their album are love songs; they hope that lovers will take from their songs a sense of protection from being lonely and broken-hearted. \nThe success this Pinoy band achieved on local shores has opened opportunities for them to share their music with Filipinos and foreigners alike\, and they have toured the USA\, Canada\, Europe\, the UK\, Scandinavia\, Australia\, UAE\, Saipan\, Qatar\, Bahrain\, Oman\, Korea\, Hong Kong\, and Japan. For as long as there are Filipinos and fans anywhere in the world who long for great music and entertainment\, AEGIS will be there to provide it.

SUMMARY:Alex Film Society Presents High School Confidential (1958)
DESCRIPTION:HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL is a 1958 teen exploitation picture where all the teens seem to be played by thirty year olds. This hilarious marijuana exposé\, directed by Jack Arnold\, opens with the title song performed by Jerry Lee Lewis. It became an instant hit for Sam Phillips’ Sun Records and reached #21 on the Billboard charts. The wildly improbable cast is headed by fifties pinup queen Mamie Van Doren and features Russ Tamblyn\, Jan Sterling\, John Drew Barrymore\, Jackie Coogan\, Michael Landon\, Charlie Chaplin Jr. and even William Wellman Jr. A perfect time capsule of ’50s teen angst and beatnik rebellion\, High School Confidential is a rare example of a major studio (MGM) trying to cash in on a burgeoning teen market. Filmed in glorious black and white CinemaScope\, The Official Razzie Movie Guide rates it one of The 100 Most Enjoyable Bad Movies Ever Made.

SUMMARY:Opera California Youth Choir Presents The Sign
DESCRIPTION:Opera California Youth Choir presents THE SIGN \nEveryone is looking for a sign\, some kind of symbol to guide them through life. \nIn this play\, THE SIGN\, we follow a group of orphaned children and their caretaker\, Pastor Sam\, played by Samuel Shin. With supernatural help from an unexpected guest\, things may turn out for the best. \nTrue friendship is championed through trials and tribulations and\, with signs and wonders all around us\, would you believe that the children and their beloved Pastor could have faith enough to overcome this obstacle by the bonds of God’s love?

SUMMARY:Live Talks Los Angeles Presents Eric Bogosian
DESCRIPTION:AN EVENING WITH ERIC BOGOSIAN discussing his book Operation Nemesis: The Assassination Plot that Avenged the Armenian Genocide \nEric Bogosian is an actor\, playwright\, and novelist of Armenian descent. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his play Talk Radio\, and is the recipient of the Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear Award\, as well as three Obie Awards and the Drama Desk. In addition to his celebrated work in the theater and onscreen\, he has authored three novels. \nFew people talk about the Armenian Genocide\, one of the 20th century’s greatest atrocities and one that to this day is not acknowledged as such by several national governments. Fewer still talk about—or even know of—the calculated revenge plot enacted in secret against the responsible officials. 2015 marks the 100 years since the Armenian Genocide. \nIn Operation Nemesis: The Assassination Plot That Avenged the Armenian Genocide\, Eric Bogosian crafts a masterful account of the conspiracy of assassins that hunted down and killed the perpetrators of the massacre. \nIn 1921 in the middle of a crowded Berlin street\, Turkish national Talat Pasha was shot dead by an Armenian student Soghomon Tehlirian. The shooter was swiftly arrested and his case went to trial. Despite his obvious guilt\, the student was acquitted—his impassioned defense claimed he was overwhelmed with rage at the sight of the man who had participated in the murder of his family. But as Bogosian details in the book\, Tehlirian was not just in the right place at the right time. He didn’t witness the deaths of his family. And he wasn’t even a student. He played the first part in a meticulously plot\, orchestrated by a small group of self-appointed patriots to avenge the nearly one million victims of the Armenian Genocide. Over the next several years\, the vigilante group tracked down and assassinated at least ten more former Turkish leaders. \nActor\, novelist\, and playwright Eric Bogosian uses his considerable storytelling gifts to create a narrative of Operation Nemesis\, set against an illuminating history of Ottoman and Armenian conflict\, as well as a chilling examination of the genocide itself. Bogosian was brought up on the importance of his Armenian heritage. Every Armenian he knew had lost family in the massacre and his grandfather told him from the tender age of four\, “If you ever meet a Turk\, kill him.” When he later began investigating his heritage in earnest\, Bogosian found scattered accounts of a cadre of assassins and a covert plan named for the Greek goddess of retribution. \nBogosian casts fresh light on one of the greatest crimes of the twentieth century and one of history’s most remarkable acts of retribution.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Presents Mozart Jupiter
DESCRIPTION:When last did you dream big – really reach for the stars? Mozart’s ‘Jupiter’ – as its name suggests – is a colossal\, forward-looking work\, one that sagely prefigures the scope and emotional depth of Beethoven’s music and other early Romantic works. Containing both gravity and joy\, it stretches the bounds of the classical symphonic form. To what other heights\, we wonder\, might Mozart have taken us had he lived beyond his 36 years? \nJoshua Weilerstein\, just 27\, already has three seasons as assistant conductor with the New York Philharmonic under his belt. He opens the program with Joseph Hallman’s Imagined landscapes: six Lovecraftian elsewheres and taps Armenian cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan\, who won the prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition in 2011\, for a Concerto Saint-Saëns wrote at age 37.\nProgram includes: \nJoshua Weilerstein\, conductor\nNarek Hakhnazaryan\, cello\nLACO debuts \nJOSEPH HALLMAN – Imagined landscapes: six Lovecraftian elsewheres\nSAINT-SAËNS – Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor\nMOZART – Symphony No. 41 in C major\, ‘Jupiter’ \nPrograms and artists subject to change. \n7:00 PM – Pre-Concert Preludes – Ticket includes admission. Some Preludes feature LIVE performances of short chamber works. All provide interesting insights into the music and artists. \nEvery person\, regardless of age\, must have a ticket.
