SUMMARY:Artbeat Presents New Shanghai Circus - Acrobats of China
DESCRIPTION:Astonishing athletes defy gravity and execute breathtaking feats as they stretch the limits of human ability in this spellbinding show. Fearless performers with boundless energy bring you more than two thousand years of Chinese circus traditions. If it’s humanly possible – and even if it’s not! – Shanghai’s acrobats\, jugglers and contortionists do it with spectacular flair. \nEach year New Shanghai Circus adds new performers direct from leading Chinese circus schools\, creating a revolving line-up of award-winning favorites like Human Strength & Beauty\, Plates Spinning\, Jar Juggler\, Diabolo\, Magic Clock\, Butterfly Lovers and Spinning Girls. \nIn 1999 New Shanghai Circus became the first Chinese acrobatic troupe to perform on Broadway and were named ‘Best Foreign Production on Broadway.’ \nChinese acrobatic tradition dates back to 700 B.C.; that’s over 2\,000 years of tumbling\, balancing and juggling. Ancient stone carvings\, earthen pottery and early written work trace the ancestry of today’s spectacular acts. \nThe art of Chinese acrobatics developed out of the Lunar New Year harvest celebrations\, where the village’s peasants and craftsmen would hold a kind of Chinese Thanksgiving. Acrobats would use household tools and common items found around the farm and workshop as part of their exciting feats. \nWhat the Press says about New Shanghai Circus: \n‘The talents of the Shanghai acrobats are beyond compare…watch these acrobats and be stunned and thrilled.’ – The Kansas City Star \n‘Show-stopping rarities of daunting difficulty’ – Los Angeles Times \n‘Fantastic’ – CBS News \n‘The show is a beautifully orchestrated presentation of Chinese circus acts dating back to harvest festivals of 2000 years ago. This modern day performance is enhanced by fabulous choreography\, amazing lighting\, enchanting scenery\, and powerful music. \nAudience members are enthralled by astounding contortionists\, masterful acrobats\, and clever comedians. They see feats of incredible skill and imagination. They gasp at many of the gravity-defying feats and applaud at the the super-human displays of power and extraordinary grace.’ – The New York Times

SUMMARY:Live Talks Los Angeles Presents An Evening with Anjelica Huston
DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Anjelica Huston discussing her memoir\, Watch Me. \nAcademy Award-winning actress and director Anjelica Huston has received honors from the National Society of Film Critics; the Independent Spirits Awards; and the Golden Globe Awards\, as well as multiple Oscar\, BAFTA\, and Emmy awards or nominations. Huston most recently starred on the hit TV show Smash and is the author of the memoirs A Story Lately Told and Watch Me. \nAnjelica Huston was 29 years old and trying to create a place for herself as an actress in Hollywood when director Tony Richardson said to her: ‘Poor little you. So much talent and so little to show for it. You’re never going to do anything with your life.’ ”Perhaps you’re right\,’ I answered. Inside I was thinking\, Watch me.” \nIn A Story Lately Told\, Anjelica Huston described her enchanted childhood in Ireland and her glamorous but troubled late teens in London. That memoir of her early years ended when Anjelica stepped into Hollywood. In Watch Me\, Huston tells of falling in love with Jack Nicholson and her adventurous\, turbulent\, high-profile\, spirited seventeen-year relationship with him and his intoxicating circle of friends. She writes about learning the art and craft of acting\, about her Academy Award-winning portrayal of Maerose Prizzi in Prizzi’s Honor\, about her roles as Morticia Addams in the Addams Family films\, Etheline Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums and Lilly Dillon in The Grifters\, and about her collaborations with many great directors\, including Woody Allen\, Wes Anderson\, Bob Rafelson\, Francis Ford Coppola\, and Stephen Frears. She movingly and beautifully writes about the death of her father\, the legendary director John Huston\, and her marriage to sculptor Robert Graham. She is candid\, mischievous\, warm\, passionate\, funny\, and a superb storyteller. \nCheck-In: All patrons must report to Check-In table upon arrival. \nBook Signing: Following the talk

SUMMARY:Live Talks Los Angeles Presents John Cleese In Conversation with Eric Idle
DESCRIPTION:John Cleese achieved his first big success in London’s West End and as a scriptwriter and performer on The Frost Report. He went on to co-found the legendary Monty Python films that include Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Life of Brian. In the mid-1970s\, John Cleese and his first wife\, Connie Booth\, co-wrote and starred in the now classic sitcom Fawlty Towers. Later\, he wrote and co-starred in A Fish Called Wanda and Fierce Creatures. He has appeared in many other films\, from James Bond to Harry Potter to Shrek\, and has guest-starred in TV shows that have included 3rd Rock from the Sun\, Will & Grace and Entourage. He lives in London. \nIn his memoir So\, Anyway… Cleese takes readers on a Grand Tour of his ascent in the entertainment world\, from his humble beginnings in a sleepy English town and his early comedic days at Cambridge University (with future Python partner Graham Chapman) to the founding of the landmark comedy troupe that would propel him to worldwide renown. After getting his start as a writer and actor on the landmark David Frost-hosted The Frost Report\, where he worked alongside many who would also later become comedy icons\, Cleese landed his most famous role as a star of the TV show Monty Python’s Flying Circus. To the legions of Python fans and comedy aficionados\, Cleese’s work with the Pythons has become the stuff of legend. His signature characters – including the Minister of Silly Walks and the owner (and would-be returner) of a dead parrot – embodied his knack for madcap buffoonery played completely straight and catapulted him to the shortlist of funniest men alive. Twisting and turning through amazing stories and hilarious digressions – with some brief pauses along the way that comprise a fascinating primer on what’s funny and why – the story of a young man’s journey to the pinnacle of comedy is a masterly performance by a master performer. \nEric Idle is an English comedian\, actor\, author\, singer\, writer and comedic composer. Idle was a member of the English surreal comedy group Monty Python\, a member of the Rutles on Saturday Night Live\, and the author of the Broadway musical Spamalot.

SUMMARY:Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Presents Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3
DESCRIPTION:Facing a tight deadline? Don’t despair – you’re in good company! When the time finally came for Beethoven to conduct and perform his long-gestating Piano Concerto No\, 3\, he rushed to get parts ready for the orchestra and barely scratched out a vague solo part for himself. By all reports\, his page-turner had a very rough night\, but Beethoven sailed through beautifully. SUMMARY:Live Talks LA Presents Martin Short In Conversation with Steve Martin
DESCRIPTION:Martin Short\, Emmy and Tony award-winning Canadian-born actor and comic\, is adored for his work on SCTV and Saturday Night Live\, in such great comic movies as Three Amigos! and Father of the Bride\, and in memorable talk show\, prime-time and theatrical appearances from Damages to his one-man Broadway hit Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me. \nShort’s memoir\, I Must Say: My Life As A Humble Comedy Legend\, tells how a showbiz-obsessed kid from Canada transformed himself into one of Hollywood’s favorite funny men – a hilarious\, occasionally heart-breaking ride through his life and times from his early years in Toronto as a member of fabled improvisational troupe Second City to Saturday Night Live to memorable movie roles. He reveals how he created his most indelible comedic characters\, among them manic man-child Ed Grimley\, slimy corporate lawyer Nathan Thurm\, and bizarrely insensitive interviewer Jiminy Glick. Throughout\, Short freely shares the spotlight with friends\, colleagues\, and collaborators\, including Steve Martin\, Tom Hanks\, Gilda Radner\, Mel Brooks\, Nora Ephron\, Eugene Levy\, Catherine O’Hara\, Paul Shaffer and David Letterman. \nBut there is another side to Short’s life that he has long kept private. He lost his eldest brother and both his parents by the time he turned twenty and\, more recently\, he lost his wife of thirty years to cancer. In I Must Say\, Short talks for the first time about the pain those losses inflicted and the upbeat life philosophy that has kept him resilient and carried him through. \nWe welcome Steve Martin back to Live Talks Los Angeles. He interviewed Tina Fey when her book Bossypants was released. As an actor\, comedian\, author\, playwright\, screenwriter\, producer and musician\, Steve Martin is one of the most diversified performers and acclaimed artists of his generation. With a list of credits too numerous to mention\, Martin has been successful as a writer of and performer in some of the most popular movies of recent film history – appearing in more than 50 films over the course of his career. As a compadre of Martin Short’s in The Three Amigos\, he’s the perfect person to lead this conversation.
