SUMMARY:Alex Film Society Presents Film Noir Double Feature: Gun Crazy / The Lineup
DESCRIPTION:July in Glendale signifies Cruise Night\, the community’s celebration of California car culture. This year you can join in the fun on July 19th. The Alex Film Society continues the theme the following Saturday with Chrome-Plated Crime: A Car-Crazy Film Noir Double Feature showcasing two film noir classics: GUN CRAZY and THE LINEUP. In GUN CRAZY\, John Dall succumbs to the charms of Peggy Cummins’ carnival sharpshooter femme fatale. His infatuation steers them down a one-way street to auto theft\, armed robbery and murder. One of the essential films noir\, it is notable for an extended bank robbery scene photographed from the back seat of the getaway car\, filmed in Montrose locations. \nIn THE LINEUP chrome-plated behemoths cruise the mean streets of 1958 San Francisco in search of prey. The cops are on the trail of a maniacal Eli Wallach and his gang; the gang is in pursuit of unsuspecting tourists returning from vacation unknowingly carrying heroin hidden in their luggage. The high-speed car chase is a precursor to a more famous one featured ten years later in Bullitt. Director Don Siegel employs extensive location work to bring a gritty realism to the narrative; he would return with another case of a cop chasing a psychopath in 1971 with Dirty Harry. \nThe program will be introduced by Alan K. Rode\, who is well-known to those who frequent the annual Dark City film noir festival at the American Cinematheque. Mr. Rode is the author ofCharles McGraw: Biography of a Film Noir Tough Guy and a soon-to-be-published biography of Michael Curtiz. He is a director of the Film Noir Foundation and producer of the Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival\, which is held each May in Palm Springs.

DESCRIPTION:Jazz pianist Tigran Hamasyan\, born in Armenia in 1987\, moved with his family to Los Angeles\, California\, in 2003. He began playing the piano at the age of 3 and\, since the age of 13\, he has played in European festivals\, his reputation growing steadily with every performance. Tigran has won several prestigious piano competitions\, most notably the 2006 Thelonius Monk jazz piano competition under the supervision of Herbie Hancock. Recently\, Tigran was named the winner of the 2013 Vilcek Price for Creative Promise in Contemporary Music.

DESCRIPTION:SHINING NIGHT is a tribute to a living legend\, celebrating the life and music of the artist whom musicologist Nick Strimple has called ‘the only American composer in history who can be called a mystic.’ Morten Lauridsen\, a National Medal of Arts recipient and perhaps the most frequently performed American choral composer\, rocketed to international stardom during his tenure as the L.A. Master Chorale’s Composer in Residence. DESCRIPTION:GLENDALE YOUTH ORCHESTRA 25th SEASON Brad Keimach\, Conductor \nProgram: BELLINI – Overture to Norma BEETHOVEN – Violin Concerto (2nd & 3rd movements) Sarah Worden\, violin \nPlus a screening of Charlie Chaplin’s The Rink with the orchestra playing the score to the film \nSarah Worden\, a senior\, is currently the concertmaster of the Glendale Youth Orchestra and the Crescenta Valley High School Orchestra. She began violin studies at the age of 7 under the instruction of Herman Markosian at the Metzler Violin Shop in Glendale. For the past 5 years\, she has also been studying (via Skype) with his brother\, Boris Markosian\, who lives in Moscow\, Russia. Sarah was chosen as an alternate to the inaugural National Youth Orchestra of the United States (2013). Sarah was an auditor in 2008 and a participant in 2009 in the Pasadena Pops Side By Side Orchestra. She placed first in the intermediate level of the 2010 Callie McGrath Competition\, was a finalist in the 2011 LA Phil Young Musicians Competition\, and a finalist in the 2009 Valley Cultural Competition. Aside from playing the violin\, she enjoys playing soccer\, biking\, hiking\, and running.
