Beethoven nearly succumbed to despair when confronted by the reality of his impending deafness. But his Fifth Symphony declares, ‘One must seize Fate by the throat.’ From the foreboding knocks of the famous C-minor opening to the jubilant C-major finale, Beethoven shares his triumph over adversity, inviting us to follow his example and be the hero in our own lives.
Music Director Jeffrey Kahane opens the 2014-15 season with Beethoven’s most famous Symphony and a foray into the exotic: Australian Cameron Patrick’s new work for strings and percussion reflects his native landscape while Saint-Saëns’ ‘Egyptian’ Concerto fascinates with melodies and rhythms the composer encountered in the Middle East. Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen makes his LACO debut.
